Government Shutdown Shutting Down World War II Memorial Enrages WND, Numerous Articles Milked from This Teet

The government shutdown right now is a horrible situation. Among many, many other things, national parks are shut down with only 10% of employees deemed essential enough to work. All national parks and monuments. The graduate-level field trip I was leading to Yellowstone had to leave early.

The National Parks service also operates everything on the National Mall, including things like the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the World War II (WWII) memorial. With the government shut down, those are shut down, and it is illegal for the park service to let people in.

Now, let me be very clear about my own opinion here: Shutting down an inactive (no moving parts) outdoor monument seems kinda silly to me. I don’t know any details whatsoever about why they chose to barricade it, other than the above statement that my understanding is that it’s now illegal for them to be open. But practically speaking, it is kinda silly.

With that in mind, World Net Daily is having a field day:

We also have a bit of other coverage. For example, Right Wing Watch reports that American Family Association’s Bryan “Fisher: Obama Wishes He Could Arrest WWII Veterans and Throw Them in Jail.”

We also have the most conservative members of congress confronting park rangers.

The self-parody that is Sarah Palin weighed in on her Facebook page:

“It’s beyond shameful to see Barack Obama disrespect and mistreat our World War II veterans so blatantly. Obama’s political stunt to ‘shut down’ their memorial by barricade is to elicit an angry response to generate bad publicity for people the president uses in his continual blame game. The difference is obvious. There aren’t any World War I veterans alive today to mistreat in a shameful political stunt. He’s deployed more guards to bar our World War II heroes from their memorial than he sent to Benghazi when our consulate was under attack. The President is treating our veterans the same way he treated school kids when he cancelled their White House tours. When times called for obvious government belt-tightening, he took it out on kids rather than look for anything that would affect him personally. And while our vets are barricaded from the memorial they built with their heroism, the government ‘slim down’ won’t affect Obama’s golf game or his family’s White House chefs.”

And we have Facebook / Twitter memes:

I’m sure WND will continue to report on this kind of thing. A few more have popped up on related monument closures in the past few hours since the last article I cite above. It’s interesting – though completely expected – that they choose to focus on the Executive Branch closures of things because of the lack of funding as opposed to the Tea Party -led (effectively) boycott of the compromise process that would have eliminated this mess in the first place.

I’m glad XKCD weighed in on this.
