The War of Sexual Education (Sex Ed)

In an unattributed article, WND wrote an “EXCLUSIVE” that there’s a “New Push to Force Sex Ed on Christian Schools.” Note that this is in Scotland. And the actual government draft guidelines include religious exemption, it’s that the Scottish Secular Society is pushing to remove the religious exemption.

I haven’t done a post on this blog yet about sex ed. Given my previous rants posts, you can probably guess where I stand on the issue: More education, more gooder. I actually remember when we had it in school. In fourth grade, all the girls had an assembly, and us boys had some other activity. In fifth grade that’s ages 9-10 usually, for those who don’t have a US model of grades), all the boys had an assembly with the male teachers, and we had some very, VERY basics about puberty, pregnancy, and condoms. I honestly remember nothing more than that. In health class in 7th and 8th grade, and then the one mandatory semester in 10th grade in high school, we had slightly more on the issue, learning about STDs, stats on condom usage and pregnancy prevention as well as STD prevention, what abortion is, etc. Then, as a senior in high school, we had a final week of assemblies and one of them split the guys and girls and we had one final bit of sex ed where they brought in a doctor from the local hospital to talk about safer sex practices and the ability of a condom to prevent pregnancy and HIV transmission (not 100%, but better than nothing).

I remember being somewhat surprised and uncomfortable in 5th grade and some either real or fake memory says that I went home and asked my parents if they knew that was going to happen and they did, that the school had sent permission slips. In 7th grade on, I expected it and found it somewhat interesting just as any other topic about biology. There were of course the few people who weren’t mature about it, like the girl in the back of the class who wouldn’t stop tittering during the lesson, but, whatever.

Now that that anecdote is out of the way, I support a facts- and evidence-based sexual education program. At least some sort of introduction preferably at or just before the age of sexual maturity where intercourse could lead to offspring. Condoms prevent pregnancy — not 100%, but somewhere around 82%. That can be the difference between a 10-year-old girl dropping out of school or her continuing on and getting a full education.

To me, while it is a fine line between the rights of the parents and the overall benefit of the state, this is a case where I would want to err on the side of more information = better. Your rights to keep your children ignorant end when, because of your actions, your child is pregnant at age 13, drops out of school, and then lives off of PUBLIC assistance for the rest of their life. Not to mention that you’ve screwed up their life. (After all, I’m assuming that if you’re against sex ed, you’re probably not going to let your little angel get an abortion, though adoption is hopefully an option.)

My thoughts are not everyones’. And clearly they are not in-line with the popular thinking on World Net Daily. Here are a few of the top comments:

Notre Dame, 17 up-votes, 0 down-votes: “Bunch of sick bastids. Mandatory reading, “It’s OK Suzy Has Two Moms and It’s OK That Boys Kiss Boys”. That is why we sent all of our kids to private schools. We don’t take one dime of gubermint money so keep your perverted and deviant views on sex and your Common Core cra(p) away from my kids.” [Note, this has nothing to do with what’s being proposed, condoms have nothing to do with “two moms.”]

the_scotsman, 20 up-votes, 1 down-vote: “No options, No Choice just do what I tell you because God does not exist and we are smarter than everyone else so just shut up while we teach your child how to become a female slut or male prostitute and if we are real successful your child will have a homosexual encounter before the age 18- welcome the world of secularism. It is time for Christians to man up – We are at war with godless Marxist sexual degenerates who do not ask permission. It is time for Christians to rise up in righteous indignation and tell them that you die before you and children bow to these soulless minions.”

aurora9, 13 up-votes, 0 down-votes: “No place on earth is safe from these sick, commie slugs. Shame on you, Scotland!”

I did not have to search for these. Those four are the top-rated as of Nov. 19, eight days after the WND story was posted.
